Impact Screens 101: Essential Backing for Your Golf Simulator

What is an Impact Screen?

An impact screen is a specially designed, durable screen that captures your golf shots in a simulator setup. Its main job is to display your virtual course in high definition while withstanding the impact of high-speed golf balls. Unlike regular projector screens, impact screens are made from heavy-duty fabrics that can endure thousands of direct hits.

Why Do You Need an Impact Screen?
An impact screen transforms your simulator into an immersive experience. It allows you to project realistic visuals, so you’re not just playing a virtual course; you feel like you’re on one. Impact screens also prevent balls from damaging your walls, containing shots safely and quietly.

What Makes a Good Impact Screen?
Quality impact screens are made with high-density, tightly woven fabrics that balance durability and image quality. Unlike other fabrics, these screens are designed to absorb impact without stretching or tearing, maintaining a clear image with minimal noise and bounce-back. Some screens come with foam or baffle backing for extra soundproofing and durability - ideal if you’re using your simulator around the clock or in a shared space.

Choosing Your Screen
Think about how you plan to use your simulator. Are you looking for the ultimate HD experience? Is noise reduction essential? Do you need a screen that can handle constant daily practice? No matter your priorities, our range of screens has something to suit every setup and level of use.

Durability

Durability is all about your screen’s ability to withstand regular impacts from high-speed golf balls. The more durable the screen, the more shots it can take and the longer it will last before degrading.

Screen durability can be improved by opting for a thicker screen that can handle more wear and tear, or by choosing one of our reversible options.

Image Quality

Impact Screens are made from different materials with different levels of weave tightness, surface textures, and thicknesses. All of these contribute to making your simulator experience as immersive as possible. A tightly woven, smooth surface ensures sharp, clear projections, while thicker screens prevent light from bleeding through to maintain vivid colours and brightness.

If image quality is your priority, take a look at the:

Noise & Bounce Back

The amount of noise generated when your shot strikes the screen and the potential level of rebound or "bounce back" from the ball are two important factors to consider.

FAQs

How do I install the impact screen properly?

To install the screen, we recommend using bungee cords to attach the top and sides of the screen to a steel or wooden frame. Make sure the bottom of the screen hangs loose to allow for some slack, which reduces tension and wear. You should also leave a 30cm gap behind the screen to give it some flexibility when hit by a ball. Alternatively, you can opt for a golf enclosure kit that is perfectly sized for your screen.

What happens if the screen is too tight or too loose?

If your screen is installed too tightly, it can cause excessive tension on the eyelets, leading to wear and potential splitting along the tension lines. If the screen is too loose, the ball will remain in contact with it for too long, causing increased wear. To get the right balance, leave a 5-7.5cm gap on the sides when using bungees for the correct tension, and ensure the screen can be pushed back by about 30cm in the centre.

How can I extend the lifespan of my impact screen?

To prolong the life of your impact screen, we recommend using only clean, brand-new golf balls, as worn or marked balls can cause more damage. Make sure the screen isn't too tightly tensioned and try to hit the centre of the screen as much as possible. Rotating or flipping the screen (if reversible) can help distribute wear evenly, and adding a foam backing layer can further cushion impacts and reduce stress on the material.

Can I reduce noise and bounce-back from the screen?

You can reduce both noise and bounce-back by adjusting the tension of the screen. Leaving some slack (so the screen can be pushed back by about 30cm) helps absorb the impact of the ball more effectively. Some customers also add foam or pillows behind the screen to further dampen sound and minimise bounce-back.

What should I do if my screen starts wearing out in specific areas?

If you notice areas of the screen wearing out, consider rotating or flipping the screen (if it is double-sided) to distribute wear more evenly. You can also adjust your hitting position slightly to avoid repeatedly hitting the same spot. Ensuring the screen has the correct tension and adding a foam backing can also help extend its life.

Will fold lines or creases affect the impact screen's image quality?

Fold lines from shipping are normal and should not affect the image quality once the screen is installed. If you notice stubborn creases, try using a steamer on a low setting after testing it on an inconspicuous area. We do not accept responsibility for any damage caused during this process.

Can I use premium or softer golf balls with the screen?

While premium golf balls like ProV1, ChromeSoft, and TP5 offer excellent performance, they can cause more wear on the screen due to their high spin rates and softer construction. For the best results and to extend the life of your screen, we recommend using clean, new golf balls that are free from scuffs, markings, or designs.

What type of impact screen is best for my needs?

This depends on your usage. For light home use, our Lite Impact Screen offers a balance between durability and image quality. For heavy home use or HD/4K image requirements, we recommend the PRO Reversible or Pro+ Impact Screens. For commercial setups, the Close-Knit or Commercial Baffle Impact Screens provide the kind of image quality, durability and noise reduction you’re looking for. And for the best of all, we recommend Pro+, which is the most premium screen we offer, has exceptional image quality, and is tested to withstand thousands of shots over 250 miles per hour!
